INTRODUCTION
Product Development Center (PDC) for Composites Based Sports Goods is a project of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA), Ministry of Industries & Production (MoI&P), Government of Pakistan to provide Common Facility Services to sports sector in the manufacturing of Composites Based Sports Goods, increase exports and enhance productivity by providing technical consultancy services, to provide skilled workforce to the industry, laboratory testing of products and raw material, and to development of Prototypes for different products.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
BRIEF PROFILE OF SECTOR
Sports goods sector is one of the main export sector of the Sialkot city with total exports of over US$ 400 million in 2015.
The rising demand for lightweight sports equipment is also expected to propel the market growth of composite based sports goods. This is because of the increased tensile strength, durability, impact absorption, resistance, stiffness, and lightweight properties of carbon fiber. Moreover, it gives full control to the user over the equipment and provide them with a high level of flexibility. Carbon fiber is emerging as a popular replacement for traditional metal, wood, and steel in modern sports equipment.
In sport goods industry where new materials have supplanted the old, include tennis racket, archery, skiing, boating, golf, and fishing. Composites have replaced previous materials and eventually reduced in price to widely affordable levels. For instance the tennis racket where wood was once the only material for frames have now been completely outclassed by new high performance materials. Tubular steel and aluminum rackets came into vogue in the early 1970's. They were lighter than wood, were unaffected by the weather, and offered more potential energy in the swing. However, the feel of metal didn't suit many players, and many did not like the impact shock these rackets radiated into their hands and arms. Composite rackets arrived in the late seventies and changed everything. They delivered resiliency and shock damping of wood, and weather immunity of metals. In addition they were also light in weight. Within six years, composite rackets became available at all but the lowest price points, and wood virtually disappeared. At present, 95% of all tennis rackets are of composite construction.
The increasing number of patents filed for composites based sporting goods by global players, growing manufacturing industries, and continuous new product launches, agreements, and expansion activities undertaken by companies are key factors for the growth of the global sports composites market.
The Asia-Pacific region is expected to be the largest market for composites based sporting goods due to the increased demand from skis & snowboards, golf stick, racket, and bicycle applications. In addition, easy availability of raw materials, low labor costs, growing manufacturing industries, new product developments, capacity expansions, and new plant establishments by various leading players are few factors leading to the growth of the Sports Composites Market in this region.
OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT
The world export market has a potential for Composites based Sports Goods having a market size of US$ 6.75 billion in 2015 and expected to grow to US$ 9.62 billion by 2025.
World share of composite converted / convertible in total world sports sector export is 15% in 2015. However, Pakistan’s current share in this market in 2015 is merely US$ 1.67 million which is 0.02% of the global composite converted / convertibles market.
The Project will be a CFC for conducting research on development of prototypes for composite based sports goods and help the industry to graduate from basic to advanced/high tech sports goods including Field, Roller and Ice hockey sticks, Baseball and Cricket bats, Billiard Ques, Rackets, & Fishing Tackle, Golf sticks, Water sports equipment, Snow sports etc. through provision of services such as chemical and physical testing, technical consultancy and skill development.
The project will help and prepare local industry to aggressively enter the international market of composite-based sports goods.
PROJECT STATUS:
PROPOSED FACILITIES/ SERVICES TO SMEs AND LOCAL INDUSTRY
The proposed PDC will help and prepare local industry to aggressively enter the international market of composite based sports goods. The sports sector already enjoys very strong linkages with international sports goods brands, which would greatly help in marketing of these products. The said center shall mainly provide following services to the industry
Prototype Development
As one of the major component of the services, the Center would conduct research on development of prototypes for composite based sports goods, which the industry is still unable to market properly due to lack of technical knowhow.
The strategy will be to graduate industry from basic to advanced/high tech sports goods as;
Field, Roller and Ice hockey sticks, Baseball and Cricket bats. Billiard Ques, Rackets, & Fishing Tackle, Golf sticks, Water sports equipment, Snow sports.
Testing Facilities
Provision of chemical and physical testing would be available at the center to analyze the material composition (mix) and physical strength of the product(s).
Technical Consultancy
In order to build capacity of the private sector to improve productivity, Center would provide technical knowhow to the units who are facing problems in manufacturing composites based products which may include appropriate composition of raw materials to achieve desired weight & strength, selection of appropriate manufacturing process, machine etc.
Training of Labor
Center would be able to impart training in various fields of composite technology including; Material Identification & Selection, Inspection & Testing, Basic Machine Operations and Composite Technology
CFC Services
The center will also provide common facility services to the Sports goods sector in the manufacturing of above-mentioned products.
